A voice compression apparatus for use in telephony comprises a device for decomposing a voice signal into a bank of narrow frequency band signals, an estimator for estimating the instantaneous energy in each band, a comparator for comparing the energy in each band to of all other bands to estimate the audibility threshold of the signal in each band, and a device for independently quantizing the signal in each band on the basis of the estimated audibility threshold. The inventive apparatus offers low processing delays and reduced computational requirements, and is suitable for use in telecommunications networks.
Appareil de compression vocale s'utilisant dans le domaine de la téléphonie et comprenant un dispositif de décomposition d'un signal vocal en un groupe de signaux à bande de fréquence étroite, un estimateur servant à estimer le niveau d'énergie instantanée dans chaque bande, un comparateur qui compare le niveau d'énergie dans chaque bande à celui de toutes les autres bandes afin d'estimer le seuil d'audibilité du signal dans chaque bande, ainsi qu'un dispositif destiné à quantifier indépendamment le signal dans chaque bande en fonction du seuil d'audibilité estimé. L'appareil, selon l'invention, présente de faibles délais de traitement et des besoins réduits en puissance de calcul, et peut être utilisé dans des réseaux de télécommunications.
