Water dilutable copolymer, its preparation and its use in aqueous coating compositions. 2.1 Copolymers enabling coatings with exceptionally good water resistance to be obtained are to be provided. 2.2 The copolymer is based on alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and optionally copolymerisable vinyl monomers, it has an acid number of from 20 to 50 and an OH number from 40 to 90 and contains, incorporated by polymerisation, from 0.5 to 5% by weight, based on the weight of the monomer used for its preparation, of one or more perfluoroalkyl ethyl esters of .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids having 6 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety. 2.3 Aqueous coating compositions for the production of water resistant films.
