A water-soluble glass treating agent consisting of, by weight: 57 to 72% of SiO2, 19.5 to 35% of Na2O and 1.0 to 2.0% of Ag2O is disclosed. Also disclosed is a water-soluble glass treating agent further containing, by weight: 3 to 19.6% of Al2O3 in the above compositions. These glass water treating agents are free from boron constituents and function to kill or suppress bacteria and microorganisms. They are low in cost because the glass is composed principally of only three constituents. The agent which contains Al2O3 functions to increase the concentration of Ag in the glass and to decrease the deliquescent property of the glass.
