This invention is directed to the preparation of glasses exhibiting a transition temperature below 450°C, a working temperatures below 500°C, and excellent resistance to attack by water and mild aqueous alkaline solutions. The glasses consist essentially, in mole percent, of: P2O5 28-40 PbO 0-35 ZnO 12-55 SnO 0-35 Al2O3 0-6 PbO+SnO 0-35 Li2O 0-25 CaO 0-10 Na2O 0-25 MnO 0-10 K2O 0-25 MgO 0-10 Li2O+Na2O+K2O 10-35 CaO+Cu2O+MgO 0-10 F 0-5 Cu2O 0-15 B2O3 0-8 At least two alkali metal oxides must be present.
