ABSTRACT Process for reducing the axial refractive index variation in optical fibres, obtained by the MCVD process, consist- ing in generating a pressure of dopant when in vapour state, equal to the vapour pressure of the dopant itself, inside the preform, during collapse, by depositing a layer of dopant within the tube having a thickness which is varied along the length of the tube to maintain a constant dopant vapour pressure at the collapse zone.
