A spherulizing furnace for manufacturing vitreous beads comprises feed means for delivering particulate feedstock, a spherulizing zone, for example in a combustion chamber, in which the feed- stock particles may be heated by burner and con- verted to vitreous beads, and means for collecting the resulting beads. The feed means comprises a reservoir adapted to hold a fluidized bed of feed- stock particles, and the reservoir has at least one overflow feed outlet opening over which fluidized particles can flow under gravity for delivery to the spherulizing zone.
