PROCESS FOR CONVERTING CARBON SOURCES TO HYDROGEN, HYDROCARBON GASES, CARBON MONOXIDE AND CARBON DIOXIDE by JAMES J. RUSS and JOHN W. SMITH ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for converting carbon sources such as peat, petrocoke, biomass, graphite and coal into gas mixtures including light hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and dioxide, and hydrogen includes reacting a mixture of such carbon sources with a metal source selected from the group consisting of aluminum/zinc; aluminum/manganese/iron; and manganese, alone or with one or more metal adjuvants such as magnesium, tin, boron, iron and nickel, at a temperature in the range of about 400°C to about 800°C, and for a time sufficient to form a substantial quantity of light tars and oils; recovering the light tars and oils so formed; cooling the mixture; hydrolyzing the cooled mixture with aqueous acid or base to form hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon gases; and then recovering the metal-containing hydrolysis residue for reuse in the process.
