ABSTRACT The specification describes an electromechanical energy conversion system which comprises a brushless electric machine having field and wound members movable relative to each other. The wound member having a plurality of energizeable windings. The system further comprises sensors associated with the machine for sensing the relative position of the members and for producing electrical signals indicative thereof. Switching circuitry is connected to the windings for controlling the flow of current therethrough. A control means is connected to the sensors and to the switching circuitry for energizing windings when winding currents fall below a first value and for deenergizing windings when winding currents exceed a second value. The specification also describes a method for controlling the conversion of energy by the aforementioned electromechanical system.
