Disclosed are method and system of operating a portable phone by voice recognition, which may dial a phone number, make a call and receive a call by recognizing a voice command. The voice recognition system of a portable phone includes a voice recognition processor for recognizing an inputted voice by measuring similarity between a predetermined reference pattern and an inputted pattern obtained by sampling specific parameters from a voice signal including a voice command and a phone number; an interface unit connected to the voice recognition processor, a handset key input unit and a cover switch, the interface unit logically combining an output signal value of the cover switch or the handset key input unit having a function corresponding to a signal value recognized by the voice recognition processor; and a control unit for controlling overall operations of the portable phone related to storing and erasing a recognized phone number, dialing the phone number, starting a call and finishing the call according to the combined signal from the interface unit.
