- 39 - Abstract New conjugates in which the bond between a glycoprotein and a nucleic acid-binding substance is provided by means of the carbohydrate component of the glycoprotein, may be used for introducing therapeutically or gene therapeutically active nucleic acids into cells which express upon their surface a protein to which the glycoprotein binds. The glycoprotein is preferably transferrin, the nucleic acid-binding substance is preferably a homologous polycationic polypeptide such as polylysine. The conjugates may be prepared by oxidising the carbohydrate group of the glycoprotein, especially sialic acid, to the aldehyde form and coupling with the nucleic acid-binding substance, which preferably contains amino groups. Complexes containing the conjugates and an effective nucleic acid are a component of pharmaceutical preparations for therapeutic or gene- therapeutic use.
