A first data stream (DS1) for a first data transmission system (DU1) with a first data rate contains ATM data cells (2, 3, 4) and structure data (10, 11, 12) that are distributed in accordance with an existing specification and associated with a section (13) that consists of a plurality of ATM data cells. The system (DU2) at a second higher data rate. The data stream (DS1) is converted into a second data stream (DS2) that contains only ATM data sells for a second data transmission system (DU2) with a second, higher data rate, while retaining its ATM cell format. When this is done, the structure data (10, 11, 12) are separated from the first data stream and written into a marked structure cell (64) with ATM data cell format for the particular section (13). The particular structure cell (64) is inserted into the second data stream (DS 2) in order to fill, in part, an unoccupied section that has resulted as a consequence of the different data rates.
