An improved system and method for pen-based handwritten and keystroke data input into a computer system is disclosed. The system and method receives pen~based data entry (52) from multiple related input boxes (30, 32, 34) within a handwriting area on a digitizer pad. Thread based processing allows each input box or group of input boxes to be separately evaluated, providing for continuous character recognition. Character strokes entered into each input box or group of input boxes are saved and interpreted together (58, 38) to allow more complete recognition of naturally written characters. Improvements on keyboard layouts are also disclosed.

Cette invention concerne un système et un procédé amélioré de saisie par stylet et clavier avec entrée dans un système informatique. Selon ce système et ce procédé, la saisie se fait par stylet à partie de pavés multiples à l'intérieur de la zone d'écriture d'une tablette graphique. Le traitement à base de fils permet d'évaluer séparément chaque case de saisie ou chaque groupe de cases de saisie, avec reconnaissance des caractères en continu. Les segments de caractère inscrits dans chaque case d'entrée ou chaque groupe de cases d'entrée sont font l'objet d'une sauvegarde et d'une interprétation communes pour une reconnaissance plus complète des caractères écrits manuellement. Sont également décrites des améliorations apportées à des agencements de clavier.
