A high pressure discharge lamp ballast includes an AC power supply means for supplying a square wave alternating current to a high pressure discharge lamp having a bulb in which first and second electrodes are disposed so as to face each other. In the high pressure discharge lamp ballast, one modulation period (T0) of the square wave alternating current supplied by the AC power supply means comprises a first asymmetrical current period (T1) for melting a protrusion formed at the tip of the first electrode and growing a protrusion formed at the tip of the second electrode, a symmetrical current period (Ts) for conducting current having a positive-negative symmetrical square wave, and a second asymmetrical current period (T2) for growing the first protrusion and melting the second protrusion.
La présente invention concerne un appareil d'éclairage à luminaire à décharge haute tension qui comprend un moyen d'alimentation en courant alternatif (CA) pour fournir un courant alternatif à ondes carrées à un luminaire à décharge haute tension ayant un tube à arc dans lequel des première et seconde électrodes sont disposées de sorte à être opposées l'une à l'autre. Dans l'appareil d'éclairage à luminaire à décharge haute tension,une période de modulation (T0) du courant alternatif à ondes carrées fourni par le moyen d'alimentation en courant alternatif (CA) comprend une première période de courant asymétrique (T1) pour fondre une protubérance formée au bout de la première électrode et développer une protubérance formée au bout de la seconde électrode, une période de courant symétrique (Ts) pour conduire le courant ayant une onde carrée symétrique positive - négative, et une seconde période de courant asymétrique (T2) pour développer la première protubérance et fondre la seconde protubérance.
