ABSTRACT In a glass melting tank having melting refining and condi- tioning zones, the tank has a wide body portion adjacent an inlet end and a narrower body portion leading from the wide portion to the outlet end. A step is provided in the base of the narrower body portion so that upstream of the step some return flow of glass occurs towards the inlet end whereas downstream of the step the flow is in a forward direction along a shallower channel towards the outlet. Flow control means is provided for regulating the glass flow into the narrower body portion and cooling is effected upstream of the step.
