MANUFACTURE OF FLAT GLASS HAVING CONTROLLED WIDTH AND NIP WIDTH Abstract of the Disclosure Apparatuses of the type used for attenuating a body of hot glass supported on and moving along a body of molten metal are each provided with a nip sensing device, a linear movement monitoring device and an angular movement monitoring device. The nip sensing device includes a plurality of discrete phototransis- tors connected to an electric circuit. The phototransistors are positioned over the glass and molten metal in a direction gener- ally transverse to the direction of glass movement. When selected ones of the phototransistors are conducting, the nip width of the ribbon is within a predetermined range. When the selected ones of the phototransistors are not conducting, the circuit operates to appropriately energize a carriage motor to appropriately move a barrel assembly of the apparatus with respect to the edge of the ribbon to provide a nip width within a predetermined range. The linear movement monitoring device includes a potentiometer which is connected by way of a spring- biased wheel and cable to the barrel assembly. The output of the potentiometer is monitored to determine the width of the ribbon, the output of the potentiometer of opposed attenuating apparatuses is monitored to determine the width of the ribbon. The angular movement monitoring device includes a potentio- meter which is connected by way of a spring-biased wheel and cable to a plate mounted on the floor. - 1 -
