A heat formable mirror is formed by sputter depositing upon a sheet such as glass a reflective coating utilizing a base layer of silicon or a combination of silicon and stainless steel films, a reflective layer formed of a reflective metallic film such as niobium, titanium or aluminum, and a protective layer comprising preferably silicon nitride. The resulting mirror can be heat formed at elevated temperatures to form a curved minor having a reflective coating free of objectionable defects.

On fabrique un miroir thermoformable en déposant par pulvérisation sur une feuille, par exemple de verre, un revêtement réfléchissant, en utilisant une couche de base de silicium ou une combinaison de silicium et de films d'acier inoxydable, une couche réfléchissante formée d'un film métallique réfléchissant, tel que du niobium, du titane ou de l'aluminium, et une couche protectrice comprenant de préférence du nitrure de silicium. Le miroir qui en résulte peut être formé à chaud à des températures élevées, de façon à former un miroir incurvé ayant un revêtement réfléchissant exempt de défauts inadmissibles.
