4693-4049 ABSTRACT An electrolytic cell is disclosed which is particularly suited for the electrolysis of a brine solution to produce chlorine and caustic or the electrolysis of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide to produce an aqueous alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution. The cell includes a frame for supporting a plurality of cell units extending in a vertical direction and, optionally, in a horizontal direction as well. Each cell unit includes a diaphragm in direct contact with one planar surface of a porous, self-draining cathode, and a current distributor in contact with an opposite planar surface of the cathode. Spacer means are provided between the diaphragm and an anode to provide for effective circulation of electrolyte between the diaphragm and the anode. The cell is adapted for operation in a monopolar as well as a bipolar mode. 34,099-F
