Tar sands separation process that includes farming a cavity in the producing zone of an in situ body of tar sands, filling the cavity with water, closing the cavity to atmosphere and subjecting the sealed-in cavity to a negative pressure. Separation of the bitumen and sands takes place at the walls of the cavity and the separated sand sinks in the water to the bottom of the cavity and the bitumen rises to the top portion of the cavity wherefrom it is removed as by pumping or the like. The negative pressure can be varied cyclically and/or the water can be mechanically agitated.
