ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus (10) and method for detecting fluorescence of an unknown target material (24). An energy source (28) is arranged to excite both the target material (24) and a reference material (34) at approximately the excitation wavelength. A reference detector (36) and a target detector (38) are optically arranged to be responsive to light emitted from the reference material (34) and the target material (24), respectively, at approximately the fluorescing wavelength. A reference measurement means (48) generates a reference output (54) in response to the reference detector (36) in order to determine the amount of fluorescence generated by the reference material (34). A target measurement means (60) generates a target output (68) in response to the target detector means (60) in order to determine the amount of fluorescence generated by the target material (24). Reference calibration means varies the electrical voltage supplied to the energy source (28) and calibrates the reference output (54). Target calibration means calibrates the target output (68) in response to a known target material.
