A method and apparatus of hermetically passivating a semiconductor device includes sealing a lid directly onto a semiconductor substrate. An active device is formed on the surface of the substrate and is surrounded by a substantially planar lid sealing region, which in turn is surrounded by bonding pads. A first layer of solderable material is formed on the lid sealing region. A lid is provided which has a second layer of solderable material in a configuration corresponding to the first layer. A solder is provided between the first layer and second layer of solderable materials. In the preferred embodiment, the solder is formed over the second layer. Heat is provided to hermetically join the lid to the semiconductor device without requiring a conventional package. Preferably the first and second layers are sandwiches of conventionally known solderable materials which can be processed using conventional semiconductor techniques. An angle between the lid and the semiconductor device can be controlled by adjusting relative widths of one or both the layers of solderable materials.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil permettant de passiver hermétiquement un dispositif à semi-conducteur. Ce procédé consiste à sceller un couvercle directement sur un substrat de semi-conducteur. On forme sur la surface du substrat un dispositif actif entouré d'une zone de scellement du couvercle sensiblement plane, à son tour entourée de plots de connexion. On forme une première couche de matériau soudable sur la zone de scellement du couvercle. On utilise un couvercle comportant une seconde couche de matériau soudable configurée de manière qu'elle corresponde à la première couche. On effectue une soudure entre la première et la seconde couche de matériaux soudables. Dans le mode de réalisation préféré, la soudure est effectuée sur la seconde couche. On assemble hermétiquement le couvercle au dispositif à semi-conducteur par des moyens thermiques, ce qui rend les boîtiers classiques superflus. La première et la seconde couche sont de préférence des sandwiches constitués de matériaux soudables classiques qui peuvent être traités au moyen de techniques à semi-conducteur classiques. On peut ajuster un angle formé par le couvercle et le dispositif à semi-conducteur en réglant les largeurs relatives de l'une des couches de matériaux soudables ou des deux couches.
